Many people, especially those of us who wear glasses, may accumulate scratches on the lens of the VR viewer over time, but today I'll show you how to repair these scratches and restore them to like-new condition.
What causes scratches on lenses?
Scratches on the lenses can be created by a variety of circumstances, the most common of which is when we position our glasses inside the visor, causing the two crystals to come into contact. It is also common for the crystals to get scratched with microscopic dust particles when being cleaned.
Supposedly this should not happen, but it will depend a lot on our use since the type of lens is not always flat, so you cannot predict if your glasses are going to come into contact.
Other causes are typically blowing or the same cleaning; if we do not use the suitable materials for cleaning the lens, this can result in micro-scratches over time.
How can I repair scratches on my VR headset?
The first item we need is Polywatch, a polish for polymer crystals that are primarily utilized in the watchmaking industry.
I also have to mention that if we have caused a really deep scratch or a significant crack as a result of a blow, this procedure will not cure your problem.
The process is really simple: after we have Polywatch, we will apply Polywatch on the lens and rub it in circles with a microfiber or cotton cloth, applying a little pressure.

The movement must be circular, and pressure must be applied to the entire lens to remove the scratch. We will conduct this process for 3 minutes and then repeat it as many times as necessary until it is completely gone.
Toothpaste method.
If you don't have time to go to the shop or wait for an Amazon delivery, there is something you can use in your bathroom to clean your VR headset. Make sure, however, that the toothpaste only works on slightly scratched surfaces. It is ineffective on clean surfaces. Deep dents cannot be removed with this procedure. Instead, you should look into other options. You'll need a toothpaste tube, Q-Tips, a paper towel, and a microfiber cloth for this stage.
- Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your lenses and spread it about with Q-Tips.
- Apply a thin, even layer of white toothpaste to your lenses. Allow it to rest for a few minutes before rinsing with water.
- Then, using a second Q-Tip, gently massage the scuffed and scraped areas in small circles.
- You might try wiping some of the toothpaste off the surface using a Q-Tip to check if it is smooth enough for you. If 3 to 5 minutes have passed and the outcomes are still unsatisfactory, then this method is not for your use case.
- After the scratches have been removed, you can begin cleaning. Wipe away any toothpaste that has remained on the lens with the microfiber cloth. If your headset has minor holes or cracks, you can remove any paste that has gotten inside with a Q-tip or an air compressor.
- To fully clean the headset, follow the methods outlined above. If you want to keep your lenses from getting scratched, you should look into lens protection alternatives first.
Is this applicable to all types of viewers?
This type of solution is compatible with virtual reality headsets with polycarbonate lenses, which comprise 99 percent of them. I tried it with the Valve Index, the Rift S, and the Oculus Quest.
You may also check to see if your viewfinder has a polycarbonate lens by lightly stroking it with something metal and listening to the sound it makes when hit. This is extremely simple.
This method will not work if the sound is similar to that of glass, such as a window or glass.
Because the PlayStation VR has a glass lens, this solution will not work for us.
Does Polywatch really work?
After my experience, I can tell that the result is fairly satisfactory, leaving the lens just as it was before. However, I cannot ensure that this technique will remove any layer of protection, so you should keep that in mind.
You must use this procedure at your own risk, but I can personally attest that it does not produce glare, distortions, or aberrations, and the scratches disappear.
It should be noted that the instructions state that it has an impact after 2 minutes of polishing, however, I personally spent about 20 minutes polishing until all of the scratches were removed.
How do I keep my VR lenses from being scratched?
The easiest way to eradicate scratches on our VR viewers is to prevent them from appearing in the first place; for this, I will provide a few simple ways to reduce the danger.
If you use glasses, I strongly advise you to purchase a WidmoVR prescription lens, which fits wonderfully on our viewer and is removable, allowing the entire family to experience the viewer.
I also urge that you do not clean the lens with a napkin or tissue, but rather with the microfiber cloth that came with the scope or one that we purchased.
The best approach to clean it is to dampen the microfiber cloth and always make circular movements around the entire contour of the lens from the inside out; this way, if it has a micro-scratch, it will not be irritating to the eye.
Finally, before storing our viewfinder in a backpack or case, place a cover on the lens to avoid the same controls or other items from getting into contact with it; if no protector is available, use a cotton cloth.
Scratch-proofing the lenses of your virtual reality headset.
If you have just received your VR Headset, or if it has just been repaired or scratched, you may want to take certain precautions to protect it from acquiring scratches in the future. Screen protectors are an amazing method to protect your device. These guards work in the same way as phone screen protectors, preventing scratches caused by dropping or scuffing the phone screen. You may prevent the trouble of needing to repair your screen by using Amazon's PlayStation VR, HTC Vive VR, and Watch Screen Protectors.
