8 Natural Ingredients to Fertilize Plants, Easily Available

There are many natural fertilizers that you can use in your garden or in the soil. Plants need three nutrients to survive and thrive: Potassium, Phosphorus, and Nitrogen. Although store-bought chemical fertilizers usually contain these nutrients, you can also provide them to plants without harsh chemicals by simply making your own.

1. Firewood ash

The first natural fertilizer that can help plants thrive is firewood ash. This material can neutralize acidic soil because it contains a fairly high alkali. Before applying it, test the acidity level of the growing media used by using pH test equipment. Before adding it to the growing medium, make sure the firewood ash is cool to the touch.

2. Eggshell

Natural fertilizer for the next plant is egg shells. Kitchen waste is often overlooked and thrown away. In fact, egg shells can also provide benefits for plants. The trick is simply by washing the eggshell, saving and crushing it to use in your garden. This eggshell contains 93% calcium carbonate.

3. Banana peel

The natural fertilizer for the latter plant is banana peel. Besides humans, plants like roses also like potassium. Just bury the bark next to the rosebush for it to compost naturally. As the rose grows, bury the bark into the top layer of soil. Both approaches will provide much-needed potassium for plant growth.

4. Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds come with many uses, but one of the best is as a fertilizer. Recycle coffee grounds to help acidify the soil. Many plants, such as blueberries, roses, and tomatoes, thrive in acidic soils. You can sprinkle coffee grounds into plant pots. You can also soak up to six cups of used coffee grounds for up to a week to make fertilizer from coffee grounds.

5. Leaf

The natural fertilizer for the fourth plant is leaves. The leaves are rich in trace minerals, attract earthworms, retain moisture, and help lighten heavy soils. You can use the leaves in two ways: work them into the soil (or mix crushed leaves into potting soil), or use them as mulch to fertilize your plants and prevent weeds.

6. Onion skin

Onions are a great source of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and more. Instead of removing the onion skin, use it to make organic, potassium-rich fertilizer for all plants. It can increase disease resistance, stronger growth, stems, and productivity. Take a few pieces of onion peel, then soak the onion skin overnight. The next day the soaking water and onion skin can be sprinkled onto the plants as a natural fertilizer.

7. Aquarium water

Aquarium water can actually help plants thrive. However, make sure the water used is fresh water, not salt water. Waste and bacteria in aquarium water have benefits for plants. Even so, make sure to use this method only for ornamental plants, not herbs, vegetable plants, or plants that can be consumed.

8. Jelly

Jelly can be a good source of nitrogen. Agar is made from seaweed which contains trace elements and actually serves as a food source for soil microbes. Dissolve 1 packet of gelatin in 1 cup of hot water and then add 3 cups of cold water. Pour directly into the soil around the plant once a month. This jelly fertilizer can be a good fertilizer for ornamental plants.
