Berikut cara setting trunk protocol 802.1Q (dot1q) di switch Cisco. Perintahnya tergantung model/IOS.
1) Switch yang masih punya pilihan encapsulation (mis. beberapa 3560/3750 lama)

interface gi0/1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
end
wr mem
2) Switch modern (mis. 2960/2960X/9200/9300) — biasanya dot1q sudah default
Di model ini biasanya tidak ada command switchport trunk encapsulation ... (karena fix dot1q). Cukup:
conf t
interface gi0/1
switchport mode trunk
end
wr mem
Cek apakah trunk sudah dot1q
show interfaces gi0/1 switchport
show interfaces trunk
(Opsional) Jika trunk ke perangkat non-Cisco, matikan DTP
conf t
interface gi0/1
switchport nonegotiate
end
